BUILDING SUSTAINABLE EDUCATION IN MALAWI

The school is being constructed with a focus on reducing the cost of labor, materials, and reliance on power tools. This is being achieved through the use of Interlocking Stabilized Soil Blocks (ISSB). ISSB bricks are produced by compressing a mixture of local soil and cement, forming an interlocking pattern that significantly decreases the need for mortar.

This innovative construction method not only cuts down on the quantity of cement and sand required but also streamlines the building process, making it faster and more efficient. Additionally, ISSB blocks are environmentally friendly, promoting sustainability by utilizing locally sourced materials and reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation and production of traditional building materials.

A staggering 37% of secondary students dropped out of secondary school in Malawi due to an inability to pay school fees. Another 8% of students dropped out due to long distances, according to the 2022 Malawi Education Statistics Report by Malawi’s Ministry of Education. The nearest secondary school in the area is 15 km away.

According to UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa, while 85% of females and 76% of males complete their primary education, only 22% of females and 24% of males complete their secondary education.
